Vitamin D and Depression

Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin. This is because we have receptors in our skin that absorb the suns light and convert it into vitamin D for the body to use. Really cool right!!

Vitamin D is important for strong bones and immunity, but studies have also shown low levels of vitamin D is linked to depression.

Here in Queensland, Australia, we get a lot of sunshine most of the year, so we have become very sun safe. Staying out of the sun when we can and lathering on sunblock; however this has actually caused some people to become deficient in vitamin D.

To improve your vitamin D levels you can:

  • Get a daily dose of sunshine, by going outside for 20 minutes each day
  • Eat foods high in vitamin D, such as salmon, mackerel and vitamin D fortified orange juice and cereal
  • Take a vitamin D supplement (but consult a health professional first)

I have a friend who likes to eat her breakfast outside on her back step in the sun each morning, to make sure she gets her daily dose of vitamin D. For me I like to get my daily dose by going for a walk or doing some gardening.

Making small changes in your life, such as getting enough vitamin D, can really make a different to your mental and physical health! So go outside today and get a little more sunshine- and vitamin D in your life.
